His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana

Ghana’s economic landscape witnessed a remarkable upsurge in 2023, as the nation’s GDP vaulted to GH¢841.63 billion, marking a substantial ascent from the previous year’s GH¢614.33 billion. Despite grappling with formidable global economic headwinds, Ghana’s strength shone through, with a commendable growth rate of 2.9%, comfortably eclipsing the Finance Ministry’s conservative GDP growth projection of 1.5%.

Sectoral Dynamics: Services Ascend, Industry Rebounds.

Unveiling the bedrock of this economic resurgence, the services sector emerged as a formidable force, contributing a commanding GH¢357.34 billion, constituting a formidable 45.6% of the GDP. Meanwhile, the industry sector, embracing pivotal domains such as manufacturing, mining, and quarrying, orchestrated a notable recovery. Despite initial contractions, a robust 1.6% expansion in Q4 2023 propelled this sector to a contribution of GH¢247.941 billion, encompassing 31.7% of the GDP.

Agriculture: Steadfast Pillar of Growth.

True to its essence as the economic backbone, agriculture maintained its steadfast presence, valued at GH¢177.606 billion, representing a significant 22.7% of the GDP. Within this sphere, crops emerged as the dominant force, commanding the lion’s share of 19.4% of the GDP, underscoring the enduring significance of agrarian pursuits in Ghana’s economic tapestry.

Dynamic Sub-Sectors and Diversification.

Further accentuating Ghana’s economic vibrancy, the trade and repair of vehicles and household goods surged, capturing 18.3% of the economic pie. Additionally, the realms of mining and quarrying, constituting 12.9%, and manufacturing, at 12.1%, exemplified a diversified economic landscape. Transport and storage encapsulated 6.0% of the GDP, rounding off the top five sub-sectors, thereby amplifying the mosaic of Ghana’s economic dynamism.

GNI Surge: Local Triumph Amidst Global Nuances.

Noteworthy strides in Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, catapulting from GHS 9,813 in 2018 to an impressive GHS 25,349 in 2023, underscored Ghana’s domestic triumph. However, the narrative assumed a nuanced demeanour in US dollar terms, warranting a comprehensive examination of underlying global dynamics.

In summary, Ghana’s economic resurgence in 2023, marked by a formidable GDP surge and sectoral dynamism, underscores the nation’s resilience in the face of global economic vicissitudes. This trajectory not only reaffirms Ghana’s economic mettle but also portends promising prospects on the regional and global stage.
